Critical Thinking

Critical thinking is not a parrot which is accepting of ideas and facts without going deep on them. Critical thinking is evaluation and analysis by mental processes in order to form purposeful and reflective judgment. It helps to solve problems and to put decisions before believe it. There should be based on concepts and principles that are not hard or fast. Critical thinking needs more important information so that can change facts to be truths. It wants to have willing and ability to think so after that there will be critical skills that will form good judgments. It combines with learning. If you think poorly, you will learn poorly because critical thinking bases on making our brain busy for constructing intellectual process.

A Cool City: Masdar

Masdar is a city with area of 6 km2 which is going to be constructed in Abu Dhabi. It will burn no gas or oil so it is Carbon neutral. In this essay, I ill write about aims of the Masdar Project.

One of the biggest is zero carbon emissions. Buildings’ sides and windows won’t put together facing the direct sunlight for the purpose of decreasing amount of absorbing solar power. There will be solar panels and solar collectors placing on buildings’ roofs and elsewhere to generate electricity.

Another goal is banning gas or oil cars. In the city, passengers would use a personal rapid transit (PRT) system which is designed like a simple vehicle running by solar power and batteries. These powered cars would run on changed routes so people can go anywhere.

Last aim is recycling 80% or water. The plan is to reuse water many times. For instance, one idea is irrigation recovery which is water can be used more than once for watering crops.

Geothermal Energy

It is a renewable energy source which comes from heat within the earth. People use this energy to produce electricity for building and other purposes. In this essay, I will write about advantages of this power.

One of the biggest is producing electricity. It generates elect city for 24 hours. It uses earth’s constant temperatures so it is available even if the weather changed every day. Another answer
is no need for fuel. This type of renewable energy doesn’t need fossil fuel and its stations produce free energy. Another advantage is environmental friendly. The usage of geothermal power can be reduced the air pollution. Moreover, it can used to assist certain manufacturing processes and dry fruits and vegetable. In addition, it increases the number of tourist and improves the economy by producing zinc and other minerals.

In UAE, we can not sue hydropower energy because it needs water falls and rivers. Hydrogen energy is also not beneficial because it is expensive and difficult to store.

To conclude, geothermal power is renewable, available and free heat, so it can be good source to Arabic countries.

Cool City Project Comments (in UAE)

Global warming has influence in environment life through air, soil and water. As the result, people life is getting to be difficult. In this article, you will find three good local solutions that help to save money and improve public health by reducing energy waste and pollution. Moreover, there are also three bad adaptations that don’t work to reduce global warming.

There are a number of good adaptations. First of all is solar and wind installations. UAE is a desert land which has sunlight through seasons. If it depends on solar power, it will limit using fossil fuel. Wind is available on that land so it can be used like another alternative energy which is wind energy. Second is energy efficiency retrofits to existing buildings. UAE has small and area so municipality and local government can work together to make fast changes in buildings. There are not that many buildings and modernizing lights and heating and cooling could be very good improving. Anther adaptation is energy efficient street lighting. There are numerous amount of lights in the streets which burn significant amount of energy. Street lights can be replaced with super efficient lights emitting diode (LED) bulbs; cities will save costs of energy.

There are also bad adaptations. One of the most important is combined heat and power. A power plant need more secure and any small mistake, it will cause casualties and negative effects. A further point is clean buses. Abu Dhabi, Dhabi and Sharjah are suffering from traffic jams and the best solution is to get red of buses with trains. Last adaptation is public funds. In UAE, most of citizens have lack of knowledge and poor. Like economical changes, it could make social problems.

In summary, there are maybe good adaptations for reducing emissions but have serious effects people live. In my opinion, we should work out the problem not by making another problem.

My Carbon Footprint

Carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced by direct people activities or indirect. It is expressed in tons of carbon dioxide (co2) equivalently. My carbon footprint is 8.58 tonnes per annum. This essay will examine my carbon footprint problems and discuss accompanying my solutions.

Many problems could result from carbon footprint. One of the biggest is driving by my car. I use my one a lot to cut long distance which is more than 45 km per one day and that causes atmospheric pollution. Energy consumption depends on fuel consumption and driving distance. Another predicament is operation of my computer. My laptop consumes oil, gas or coal to generate electricity and by that operation, I also generate co2 because I use natural oil to run my compute and a house. A final difficulty is using papers. Papers are produced from wood which is one source of co2. Different types of papers have different amount of gas emissions.

There are several things I can do to deal with my carbon footprint. One answer is limiting use of my car. I could contribute to reduce emissions by using my bike to travel short distance and that will less burning process of fuel. I can also use small and Toyota cars like Corolla which has less consuming of fuel. A second solution is to start recycling system. It is better to separate my trash baskets like one basket for papers and second for plastic bottles.

To conclude, Small changes in our life style could help to reduce emission and global warming because it is mostly direct human activities. The carbon footprint can be more efficient and effective, if we cooperate to find and apply possible solutions.

Those pictures are my contributing to reduce Carbon Emissions.

Heat and Weather

This video explores both convection and radiation to explain how weather is related to the transfer of heat energy. Convection occurs when temperature differences arise within a fluid, such as an ocean, and fluid motion almost certainly follows in which heat is transferred from one area to another. Movements of hot ocean currents can have profound effects on global weather. Radiation is energy traveling in the form of electromagnetic waves or photons. An example of this regarding weather would be the effect of the Sun melting an ice cap, or the greenhouse effect, whereby heat is trapped within the atmosphere.

Polar Weather

The extreme weather conditions experienced in the polar regions of the Arctic and Antarctic, where six months of near-constant daylight is followed by six months of dark winter, are detailed and explained in this video. In particular, the importance of the massive ice sheets, and how they are affected by global warming, is discussed in the video.

Summery of "An Inconvenient Truth" Film

In hundred of graphs and videos, the film shows the global environmental challenge which is global warming. It gives what the earth was and what it will be in next decades.

Global warming is increasing of carbon amount in the atmosphere because of burning process by cars or other fossil fuel sources. Carbon trapped in the atmosphere and acts like the glass surrounds the earth. As the result, when sunlight come through the atmosphere the earth warm and exceed heat can’t get out, so the temperature raises causing environmental crisis.

Liquid areas like oceans have ability to absorb much heat than solid grounds like icebergs which serves as a mirror that deflects sunlight. However, as water heats up, the polar ice and icebergs starts to shrink and melt. Because of melting ice, creatures like polar bears have to find another place to put their foot on it. In some research these bears have to swim much longer distance around 30 miles.

What does it mean to have long distance?
What are these polar bear going to do with this serious planetary effect?

Furthermore, increasing hooter weather caused not only floods of water but also droughts. Soil moisture has evaporated and the ground becomes not stead or stable. Many houses have demolished and long trees swing. Moreover, because of melting polar ice, world sea level rises. The rising could be up to 20 feet. See water covers some habitable lands and causing memorable number of consulting and losses.

My comment

The film was very interesting and worth seeing. I learned how the environmental crisis effect on the weather, sea and land. It is really a global serious problem. I learned that problem have come like result of what people do especially in last 3 or 5 decades. One of bad effects, the world sea level is rising to cover some residential areas. Hot weather is rapidly increasing because many countries turn to be industrial and the worst is coming if people don’t begin to change their behavior.

Nothing is inevitable

Time is running out. The green house problem has become most serious those days and the worst is coming. If we want to bring gas emissions down, we have to make changes in the world economy and the way we live.

Eco-friendly energy sources

Wind and solar power are both mainstream energy option available today. Wind turbines are connected with blades which turn to generate electricity. They can be used on the plains like in India or off shores like in Denmark. Growing faster than wind power, solar energy provides power for individual buildings by using light sensitive semiconductors which generate electricity.

Biofuels

They are trees, crops and farm waste that are replaced with coal ro distilled to produce ethanol. Ethanol is a fuel that could be sued in power plant or directly in vehicle engine.

The hydrogen economic cars

Hydrogen is made from water which could burn like petrol.
